Cracker Barrel in Springville

Service

Rating: ★★★★☆

This was our first time at Cracker Barrel and the server was well accommodating. She answered questions and made recommendations. Drinks stayed full and the food was hot upon arrival. We did not like that we had to pay for our check at the front of the restaurant. The women there was slow and did not seem interested in any type of chit chat so she came off as somewhat unfriendly.

If you are looking for something healthy you came to the wrong place. Everything is southern style fried. If you are looking for a vegetarian meal, look somewhere else. I ended up with a child’s grilled cheese sandwich. I didn’t like that they put pickles on top of the sandwich that made it taste like pickles even after I took them off.

Devin got chicken and dumplings. Keep in mind they are the noodle type of dumplings, not biscuit type, which we like better.

This is definitely a family friendly place. We liked browsing the home-style general store while we waited to be seated. There was not a long wait but the dining area was packed. It is decorated with old time cowboy paraphernalia that is fun to look at. It is definitely a place where you can take your kids but it’s on the noisy side so it’s not a place for a quiet meal.

Our Recommendations

If you like fried, give it a try. Since our first visit, we have heard that the best items to order are on the breakfast menu. They serve breakfast all day so maybe that is the way to go.

Brick Oven in Provo

Service

Rating: ★★☆☆☆

The service started off pretty good but just kept going downhill after we were seated. We ordered the “feast for two.” Devin ordered the lasagna after the server assured him there were not any mushrooms in it. I got the fettuccine alfredo. When we got our food, it didn’t take long for Devin to find that the lasagna did have mushrooms, and lots of them. The server should know the menu better than that. If she didn’t, she should have found out before making promises. Fortunately, she brought a different entrée at no additional charge. Later, we were asked what kind of cookie we wanted for desert. We made are selection only to be told a few minutes later that they were out. Not impressed.

Their garlic bread is really good but everything else is so-so. The pasta sauce isn’t overly flavorful. The pizza is pretty good but you can find something just as good but at a better price somewhere else. Their homemade root beer is a popular item as well as their apple beer.

It is a nice clean place. It is family friendly but doesn’t get too noisy. They are able to accommodate large groups. We definitely like the over-sized booths. When we were there they had someone going around making balloon animals for kids and whoever else wanted them. There is plenty of room in the waiting area at the front which many restaurants don’t have.

Our Recommendations

If you get the feast for two, there is no need to upgrade to the full salad bar. There is plenty to eat with what it already comes with.

Review of Sizzler in Orem, Utah

When my family gathers, generally eating out at a buffet is on the top of the list. Sizzler, located in Orem, prides itself as being the grand daddy of salad buffets in Utah county. For this reason, we find ourselves visiting this buffet a few times a year when family requests it.

We arrived on a friday night, packed full of people. The line moved somewhat slowly, but there was a lot of people to get seated. Our waitress was nice and friendly and did the best she could to keep up with a group of about 20 people. Drinks did get mixed up a bit, but it was fine for those people in our party that ordered water. I didn’t notice anything that was outstanding with the service, so this category receives an average score.

We both ordered the salad buffet. I ordered a sirloin steak with a buffet cooked medium well. When my steak arrived, it was so underdone I had to ask for it to be re-cooked. My aunts steak was ordered as rare, but hers was cooked well done so we traded. I was enjoying the steak until I got to the rare part which I didn’t think possible, but the waitress was kind enough to bring it back to the cook. She later informed me that they overcooked the steak and I would be getting a new one. By the time the new steak was served, it was time to go.

Moving onto the salad buffet. No complaints here. They did a good job keeping the food stocked and pretty. The salad looked great and there were plenty of toppings to add that could fill nearly anyone’s desire.

After a “good” steak, who wouldn’t want to dive into a bowl of ice cream? Well I guess we visited Sizzler on the wrong night because the ice cream machine was more like a milk dispenser. It was hilarious watching people’s faces as they realized that their brownie sundae turned into a pool of milk. I was very disappointed that their entire dessert section rested on the fact that the ice cream machine needed to be 100% operational. Couldn’t they have put out some pudding or something?

It was a busy night, but I didn’t notice any unclean sections or dirty bathrooms. The restaurant is right next to University Mall so parking was fun on a friday night. If you go there on the weekend, be patient.
